Today we had to get up really early. We had a deep sea fishing trip planned in Kona and had to check in at the Harbor at 6:15AM. We were all really excited about this trip because Hawaii has some of the best deep sea fishing in the world. Our possibilities of what we could catch were endless (and that was a little scary to me!). We arrived at the dock and boarded our charter boat with
Bite Me Sportfishing. We had a private charter for just the three of us. We started out for the ocean and not too long afterwards we were able to see spinner dolphins. The dolphins were out in the wild but looked like they should have been in a Sea World Show! We hadn't even had a chance to get familiar with everything on the boat before we hear one of the crew guys yell to Joe to get hooked in because we had something! After lots of reeling in, Joe pulled in a good sized Mahi Mahi. Once we all settled down from that experience they had each of us get into the chair and go over exactly what to do for our next catch. Tanner was going to be the next one to try and bring something in if we got a bite. Sure enough before too long, we had another bite! Tanner jumped in the chair, got hooked in and we hear the captain yell that we have a Spearfish. All of the sudden we see something jump out of the water and believe it or not it was a Blue Marlin! The captain yells again but this time yells--get the kid out of the chair, it is a Blue Marlin. So, Joe jumps in the chair and tries reeling in the Blue Marlin but when the Blue Marlin jumped in the air it had lost the hook. This fish was enormous...the captain said that it was in between 200-300 pounds (probably around 275 pounds is what they thought)! Luckily for me, that was the last catch because it was my turn next.
Since we were staying at the hotel, there was no need in taking our fish that we caught with us so we left it for the crew. For lunch though, we wanted at least try some Mahi Mahi and I had heard from two different people that recommended Oceans Restaurant and Sports Bar. Our home inspector had recommended the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi with pesto sauce. She was right, it was to die for and I am not a fish person but this was very mild and very good.
