Belize is only a 2 hour flight from Houston...can't beat that! Once we reached Belize City, we took a flight (on a tiny plane) by Tropic Air to our final destination, Ambergis Caye. The Tropical Island, Ambergis Caye is just off the coast of Belize.
Ambergis Caye is the largest Caye along the coast of Belize. Ambergis Caye is located on the Caribbean Sea and is a popular spot for diving. The world's 2nd largest living coral reef is located here! The main town on Ambergis Caye is San Pedro which is where we stayed. The Caye is about 1 1/2 miles long and in some places 1 mile wide. The resort we stayed at was The Phoenix. This resort is beautiful! The town is just as charming. Everyone was so friendly and helpful on the island. The means of transportation on the island are golf carts. We rented ours that we named "Little Red" for the week while we were there. So fun!

During our stay we took 2 very different snorkel trips. On our first snorkel trip by Lil Alphonse, we snorkeled the Hol Chan Marine Barrier Reef and Shark Ray Alley. While snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley, we saw and swam with Sting Rays and Nurse Sharks. Yes, you heard me right....I swam with and touched nurse sharks and sting rays! What an awesome experience that was! We later found out that Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel did this same tour. You can see her segment here.

Our 2nd snorkel trip was with Cari'Bean Tours with Oliver and Alex. This was a private tour with just the 2 of us...and the tour guides. We snorkeled in another spot on this day that we had not visited yet, had a BBQ on a private beach and was served the fresh fish and seafood caught by Joe and Alex. We also visited and walked around another caye along the coast, Caye Caulker.
The snorkeling on this day was out of this world. Joe and I saw things under the sea that we have never seen in their natural living environments. We saw sand dollars on the sea floor, starfish, lobster, sea turtles, moray eels and even a seahorse! Our bbq on the private island was a cute little place with nothing to do but relax and eat. Nothing wrong with that, right?

The town of San Pedro is filled with amazing restaurants. We took many pictures of our many yummy meals and drinks while were there so you could see too!

One of the nights that we were there, we had dinner at Caliente and then went to the Chicken Drop at Wahoo Lounge next door.
Here’s how the Chicken Drop works: During the Happy Hour, bar patrons and other passersby purchase a number between 1 and 100 that corresponds to a square on a 10×10 grid inside a net out on the beach. After all the squares are spoken for, the staff brings out a basket with a couple chickens inside. One lucky gambler has the honors of tossing one of the chickens onto the board, but not before they are encouraged to shake it three times and then blow in its ass. The blowing party is supposed to be like blowing on dice to make them lucky, but it may actually help speed up the proceedings.
The chicken is dropped onto the board and usually appears to be stunned for a short period of time, probably unaware that its next bowel movement will likely determine who is buying the next round of drinks, at least for that person’s friends. It takes however long it takes, but if the chicken seems constipated at all another chicken is tossed in beside it to help motivate the first one, somehow.
The crowd roars, each hoping the chicken will eject its waste on their numbered square. Then it happens and 99 hearts are broken while 1 person is suddenly the belle of the ball. The reward for being the lucky one? First you get to clean up the chicken poop while your photo is taken, then you get the entire $100 pot to do with what you please.
This trip for my 40th birthday was wonderful! I know some day we will return to Ambergis Caye and I can't wait!
